Google Mars

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

If you have never checked it out, then maybe you should head over to Google Mars and take a look at the official Google site dedicated to providing some very detailed maps of the planet Mars. Though obviously you won’t recognize any of the locations it is still great viewing. The Google Mars website is here and it even allows you to view it in 3D with Google Earth! If you want to find out more about the planet Mars read the Wikipedia entry here.

Save Power on your PC

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

The environment is a hot topic in this day and age and whilst many hardware manufacturers are (slowly) making changes to the devices they manufacture, those of us with existing, or older hardware often are branded as greedy consumers and destroyers of Mother Earth.

Not so anymore! Edison is a free program that automates the process of energy saving on your PC so that even the novice computer user is able to do their bit for the environmen. Check out the Edison website here.

Clean Your Drives Before Sale!

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

Interesting article about a man who bought a second hand USB MP3 player and when he accessed it realized it contained US Military data files.

It is doubtful that they are critical and the US Military has been banning use of portable data storage since November 2008. Anyway you can read more about it HERE.

Flexicord - A GREAT New Idea!

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

Wireless electricity and wireless data transmission for all peripherals has been promised for many, many years but it has never really reached an end-user delivery. I still sit looking at the jumble of cords on, around and underneath my desk, TV cabinet and various other places around the house.

Wireless electricity has recently been successfully demonstrated and (hopefully) we will see this in the (near) future. Until then check out this site HERE.

These cords have just jumped up to No. 1 spot on my tech shopping list. The site is HERE and an example picture is below. I will be happy when these become a regular item in my local PC shop!

Congratulations to the designer, the elegance of re-designing with Zen simplicity a products millions (if not billions) use everyday!

Try a New Operating System Today!

Tuesday, January 13th, 2009

There is a lot of talk of Windows 7 which has officially been released as a Beta, which means many, many people will be queing up to download and burn the (large) ISO.
There are, however, many other Operating Systems available these days and whilst Windows 7 is looking like a great release, it will not be free when it is finally released. The Beta version is, though it will most likely expire and will not be identical to the final release version.
Anyway, enough about Windows, what about the alternatives? Most people will automatically think Linux (Ubuntu or similar) or OSX (from Apple) but there are a lot of others out there.
My two personal favorites which I watch frequently are Haiku OS and ReactOS. Neither of these is ready for final release, or even Beta Release but they are both exciting developments in the Operating System world.

Interested in finding out more? Well, ReactOS is HERE and Haiku OS is HERE and there is a great post on Download Squad regarding Free Operating Systems and it is HERE.
